Club 38 in West Chicago wants DJ’s to play free
Club 38 in West Chicago is looking to line their DJ Lineup for the month of March with DJ’s who are willing to play for free, suckers can apply at the e-mail address listed below.Let me preface this post by saying that by reading the archives of my blog you’d like it would be about time I stopped looking for DJ gigs on Craigslist. The fact of the matter is that I tend to highlight the bad apples and idiots, in actuality about 75-80% of the contacts I make on craigslist turn out to be good bookings.
So, like usual I answered an ad on craigslist looking for DJ’s for a “DJ Idol” Competition. The craigslist ad made clear that the winner of the competition would be awarded a CD Release party (not sure how many applicants are producers..), a cash prize (amount not disclosed), and a residency at Club 38 (again, undisclosed night and pay rate).

We will go over rules, regulations, and what is required of you. You do not need to bring any equipment. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email.Thank you,Kalee GenisClub 38
You are the middle of West Nowhere, while I am in the West Loop (however this is not your problem), but lets say I’ve put in 10 hours of my own time promoting this event and I get 20 people to drive almost an hour outside the city.
I have to supply my own equipment, which means I have to drive instead of taking public transit, thats roughly $12-15 in gas round trip.
Lets assume that your friday night drink prices are between $6-$8 for a typical mixed drink, and each patron I bring spends an average of $20. 20 people x $20 = $400 (lets say $300 after liquor costs)
Lets assume that all 6 DJ’s that night bring 20 people, 6 x $300 = $1800
The average DJ fee is $60/hr or $300 if you book the entire night.
So your club/management has invested nothing in booth equipment, nothing in promotions, nothing in DJ Booking Fees. So the cost to your club is virtually nothing (your paying electricity once the club opens regardless).
Let say that each person that each DJ brings pays a $5 cover and you put 10% of that aside towards the winner pool
Thats $600 – 10% = $60
That leaves $540 to cover operating costs
If you have 2 Bartenders @ 3.50/hr x 6 hours = $42
2 Bouncers @ $10/hr x 6 hours = $120
1 Barback @ $8.25/hr x 6 hours = $50
1 Doorman @ $10/hr x 6 hours = $60
1 Cashier @ $8.25/hr x 6 hours = $50
That still leaves you $200 in profit from cover charges alone.
So your clubs investment… minimal to nothing
Your clubs profit : $1800
—-
Total Profit : $1800
Each DJ’s average investment :
10 x $30/hr promoting = $300
Flyers = $15 (if they are generated in bulk and split cost between all 6 DJ’s)
30 min DJ Fee = $30
Wear & Tear on personal equipment (3% of equipment’s total cost) : $60
Each DJ’s expected profit : $0
—–
Total Profit : -$465
Lets assume this for winning DJ…
The Winning DJ will have to play 2 shows, but may be required to play up to 4 depending on voting, even at 2 shows he takes the $60/night (10% that was skimmed from the cover) x 4 nights = $240 + $500 guaranteed = $740
Winning DJ’s earnings : $740
Winning DJ’s investment : $930
—
Total Profit : -$190
So the “winner”, for lack of a better term, goes into the start of his residency in the hole? Do you expect this DJ to then promote further events while they are a resident? Are you going to purchase equipment after the competition or should I just sign my stuff over to you?
I pray for the idiot who falls for this bullshit, but kudos for coming up with a creative way to not pay for your DJ’s for the next month…

DJ Meltdown signs with Cage & Aquarium Productions
When I first started to talk with DJ Trentino after establishing myself in Chicago I noticed that he was affiliated with a production company with a very uncommon name, Cage and Aquarium. I started to do some research and noticed that this company had some very favorable yelp reviews, so naturally when they put up an ad on Craigslist looking for new DJ’s I jumped at the opportunity.Cage and Aquarium is Chicagoland’s premier event deejay/emcee service. Our crew is committed to making your event unique while pulling off a stylish formality you can appreciate. Our passion for music makes us who we are, and we understand how the music of your event can set a vibe, change a mood, or define a moment. And most importantly we are committed to partnering with you every step of the way.
-Cage & Aquarium Productions
Little did I know that the interview would go very well, and I would get a call from Tyler & Shelley just a couple weeks later welcoming me to the team. So you very well may catch me around town DJ’ing a your friends’ party, your sisters’ wedding or your favorite night spot. Also, if you need a DJ for your event, you can’t go wrong with any of the talented individuals at Cage & Aquarium.
Tomcraft – Biscuit (Paul Gala Remix)
This track came through on my facebook feed today from The Coolbreezers. Haven’t heard of Tomcraft or Paul Gala before, but they are on my radar now and this track will definitely make it’s way into my rotation.Blog Categories
