Dwight Lofts @ 642 S. Clark St in Chicago, IL is a new housing development in the South Loop.

Occasionally I peruse the ad’s on craigslist for DJ Opportunities within the city.  One ad in particular today prompted me to write.  This isn’t the norm, but occasionally you’ll get someone who doesn’t understand the value of anything outside of thier particular profession.  So what I’ll try to do here is to make clear the process a Mobile DJ goes through for a particular gig, to help you understand why the going rate for 4 hours of DJ service is between $250-$300.

Hypothetically, let’s say that you book a DJ for 4 hours, between the hours of 5pm & 9pm.

Before we even prep for the show we have to spend at least an hour finalizing the contract, communicating with you about what types of music, and lighting you’ll want at your event.

Hours before the show we have to secure your music and line up playlists for specially requested songs, gather and test equipment, including checking lighting for faulty or broken bulbs (which is becoming less necessary with the phase-in of LED lighting).  I always make sure to test my microphones and amplifiers before each gig, as well.

It then takes me about 20-30 minutes to load my truck, drive to your location, and another 20-30 minutes to unload my truck, find a place to park, and then proceed to hook up my system, which is another 20-30 minutes.

4 hours of performing….

Then 20-30 minutes to break down and pack up, and 20-30 minutes loading it back in to my truck, drive home, and 20-30 minutes to unload it all into my garage.

So what seem like a “4 hour” booking for the customer, is essentially 8 hours for the DJ, and to offer $40, or even $100 is not going to get even the cheapest of mobile DJ’s to lift a finger.  It’s not worth the hassle of moving our equipment.
